Slip rings and carbon brushes for sugar mill motors

A sugar mill runs hard for a short season and then stops. Cane carriers, crushers, mills and centrifugals are driven by large wound rotor motors that start against full load, and every one of them depends on a slip ring unit and a set of brushes. The crushing season is unforgiving: a slip ring failure in the middle of it stops cane, and cane cannot wait.

That is why sugar mill work is mostly done in the off-season. We manufacture slip ring units for motors up to 5000 HP, carbon brushes in copper metal-graphite grades for high rotor currents, and brass connection plates and terminal boards for 200–1500 HP motors — all made to your existing sample so the overhaul goes back together without surprises.

What these parts have to survive

  • Seasonal operation — long idle periods let moisture and juice vapour attack ring surfaces and terminals
  • Very high starting torque on crusher and mill drives puts sustained high current through the rotor circuit
  • Bagasse dust and cane juice atmosphere are both abrasive and corrosive
  • Off-season overhaul windows are fixed, so lead time is as critical as fit

Sugar Mills — common questions

When should sugar mill slip rings be ordered?

In the off-season, before the overhaul begins. Sending worn slip rings and brush samples early gives time for manufacturing and inspection well ahead of crushing, instead of ordering under pressure once the season has started.

Can you make a slip ring for a crusher motor without a drawing?

Yes. A worn sample is enough — we measure ring diameters and widths, hub bore, keyway, insulation build and terminal positions from the part itself and manufacture to those dimensions.

What causes slip ring surfaces to pit after an idle season?

Standing still in a damp, juice-laden atmosphere lets the contact film break down and the ring surface corrode where the brushes rest. Rings can be re-machined if there is enough material left; once undersize or deeply scored, a new unit is the reliable answer.
