Steel Plants

Slip rings, commutators and carbon brushes for steel plant motors

Steel plants are the hardest duty we build for. Rolling mill drives reverse under load, EOT and ladle cranes start and stop all shift, and the motors sit in heat, mill scale and iron dust. Both machine families are represented — DC mill motors with commutators, and wound rotor AC motors with slip rings — so a steel plant store typically carries all four of our main product lines.

We manufacture DC commutators built from hard-drawn copper segments with mica insulation, heat-seasoned under pressure and mirror-turned, plus slip ring units for motors from 200 HP up to 5000 HP. Carbon brushes and brush holders are made to match the existing brush gear so nothing has to be re-machined at your end.

Where our parts are used in steel plants

  1. 01

    Rolling mill main drives

DC commutators built to the original segment count and dimensions, plus matched carbon brushes for stable commutation under reversing load.

  2. 02

    EOT, ladle and charging cranes

Slip ring units and brush holders for wound rotor hoist, long-travel and cross-travel motors that start under full load.

  3. 03

    Roller table and auxiliary drives

Carbon brushes and holders in the sizes your existing brush boxes already take.

  4. 04

    Motor terminal boxes

Brass connection plates and terminal boards rated 200–1500 HP, made to the original pattern for drop-in replacement.

What these parts have to survive

  • Reversing and shock loads on mill drives cause heavy commutation stress and brush chatter
  • Iron dust and mill scale are conductive — they track across insulation and shorten segment life
  • High ambient temperature near furnaces and mill stands demands Class F/H insulation
  • Crane duty means constant starting, so rotor circuits and slip rings see repeated high current

Made to your sample

Send the worn part or a dimensioned drawing and we manufacture a replacement to the same sizes — no re-machining at your end. Manufacturing in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh since 1995.

Steel Plants — common questions

Can you rebuild a DC commutator for a rolling mill motor?

We manufacture new commutators to your sample or drawing. Copper segments are insulated with mica, clamped in steel V-rings, heat-seasoned under pressure and finish-turned so the assembly runs concentric from the first day. Balancing is available on request.

What size slip rings can you make for crane and mill motors?

We build slip ring units for motors from roughly 200 HP up to 5000 HP, in three-ring and multi-ring stack configurations, with copper, phosphor bronze or steel rings on insulated hubs.

How do you handle heavy-duty brushes for large machines?

Large machines usually take split or wafer-type brushes with twin flexible leads. We make these to the sample so the split geometry, lead length and terminal type match the holder you already have.
